Autonomic nervous system and anxiety
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates automatic body functions such as heart rate, breathing, digestion, and stress responses. In anxiety, changes in autonomic activity can produce both physical sensations and ongoing states of activation.

What is the autonomic nervous system?
The autonomic nervous system is a part of the peripheral nervous system responsible for regulating involuntary processes. These include heart rate, blood pressure, breathing patterns, digestion, and temperature regulation.
The ANS operates automatically, meaning it functions without conscious control. It continuously adjusts the body based on internal and external conditions.
Sympathetic vs parasympathetic nervous system
The autonomic nervous system has two primary branches:
- Sympathetic nervous system: Activates the body for action, often referred to as the “fight or flight” response
- Parasympathetic nervous system: Supports recovery and regulation, often referred to as “rest and digest”
These systems work together to maintain balance, shifting the body between activation and recovery states.

What people experience as anxiety often reflects increased sympathetic activation and reduced parasympathetic recovery, rather than a purely cognitive process.
How the autonomic nervous system relates to anxiety
Anxiety involves increased activation of the sympathetic nervous system. This can lead to physical changes such as increased heart rate, faster breathing, muscle tension, and heightened alertness.
When activation persists, the body may remain in a heightened state even without a clear external threat. This is commonly described in generalized anxiety disorder.

Why the nervous system can stay activated
